THIS IS THE VERY FIRST FULL LENGTH ALBUM BY FELA RECORDED IN 1965

In early 1965, just as the West African High-life scene was starting to get boring, the revolutionary sound of Fela Ransome Kuti & His Koola Lobitos burst upon us. A strikingly original musician, Fela Kuti was trained at the Trinity College of Music in London. From the very first, he was influenced by those "greats" of the jazz world - Thad Jones and Miles Davis. He gained much practical experience gigging in his spare time with London-based jazz men. A very talented musician - Fela's primary instrument is the trumpet, but he is also a swinging pianist and rave vocalist, as well as a composer and arranger. A musicians' musician. To maintain his reputation as West Africa's leading musician, Fela continuously experimented with varying forms of High-life and other exotic rythmic patterns. The results of these experiments are evident on all the numbers on this LP. Even the old familiar tunes have that new and original High-life tempo that Fela has made his own. Many so-called original bands have found fleeting success on the West African scene - only to fade quickly into obscurity, but Fela's extreme talent has made him one of its perennial stars...

Mod is entering it's 60th birthday and is once again growing as a cultural force – a new generation has discovered this most quintessential of British cultures.

Acid Jazz are celebrating with the next installment of their highly successful RARE MOD compilation series.

The east London indie has combed the attics and wardrobes of hundreds of original musi-cians and collected an amazingly broad cross-section of previously unreleased material. Acetates, demos and bona-fide unreleased songs combine on a hard hitting and commer-cially successful release.

Volume one was released earlier this year to much acclaim and was described as a genu-ine rival to both Nuggets and Pebbles. Volume two is a step up in class and rarity.

From obscure British soul (The Donnie Elbert Band and Mac Kissoon) though R n B (C Jam Blues, Parker's Mood and The Gass Company), early psyche (The Nocturnes, The Amboy Dukes, The Summer Set) to out-and-out mod classics (The Fleur de Lys and The Richard Kent Style) – all the genres and styles are represented and many of the musicians involved went on to massive success in later years.

With mod enjoying its highest profile in a generation, from Weller and Oasis to The Last Shadow Puppets and Twisted Wheel, this album showcases a whole host of brilliant, un-discovered anthems for old hands and new converts alike.

Publicado en 1974, "Elkin & Nelson" aportaba sabores únicos al pop español de aquel momento: canciones y ritmos latinoamericanos (más el 'Light My Fire', de The Doors) realizados con frescura e intensidad. Contiene el primer éxito de radio del dúo, 'A caballo'. Estamos ante una brillante producción del músico menos comprendido de entre los pioneros del beat español: Juan Pardo, fugaz cantante de los Pekenikes y miembro fundador tanto de Los Brincos como de Juan & Junior. Los hermanos Elkin y Nelson Marín Pérez aterrizaron en España allá por 1973. Procedían de Medellín (Colombia) y traían en su equipaje temas propios y canciones sudamericanas, caribeñas y hasta estadounidenses, muchas desconocidas en Europa. Tocando simplemente guitarras acústicas y cantando con exuberancia, ofrecían un espectáculo energético por los clubes madrileños. Juan Pardo fue de los que se quedaron fascinados por su fuerza y les llevó a CBS, entonces la discográfica más audaz del mercado español. "Elkin & Nelson" es un perfecto ejemplo de las producciones de alta gama de CBS en España durante la década de los setenta. Se contó con los mejores músicos de estudio disponibles en Madrid y el resultado fue amorosamente empaquetado por el eficaz departamento de arte de la compañía. A la hora de posar ante el fotógrafo, los hermanos fueron peinados, maquillados y vestidos con un glamour que les acercaba a lo que se entendía como estética del llamado "Gay Power". Fue una jugada muy arriesgada que no les ganó muchas simpatías. Incluso en los últimos años del franquismo, en España se perseguía a los homosexuales y no se toleraban los looks extravagantes en la televisión estatal. Es conocida la anécdota que cuenta que se prohibió la actuación del grupo británico Sweet cuando los censores vieron su aspecto unos minutos antes de salir al aire. De todos modos, Elkin & Nelson causaron cierto revuelo: fueron los únicos artistas que se expresaban en español que aparecieron en "Gay rock" (Ediciones Júcar, 1975), el influyente libro de Eduardo Haro Ibars. Aunque el poeta se quedó decepcionado cuando entrevistó a los colombianos y descubrió que ni siquiera mantenían la ilusión de jugar con la ambigüedad sexual. En décadas posteriores, los hermanos Marín Pérez reaparecieron fugazmente por España con discos conjuntos o con trabajos en solitario de Elkin.
